We talked about Ron Howard and how he became Opie Taylor in our last episode. As part of that, we looked at the impact that Ron had on The Andy Griffith Show and how different Mayberry would have been if not for Ronnie as Opie.
That got me thinking, how much impact The Andy Griffith Show has had on the world around us. I know it’s only a TV show from over a half century ago but think about Mayberry and how it, and its citizens, have become part of the landscape of America.

On TCNW #480 we featured an interview with Rance Howard, the father of Ron and Clint. During that interview Rance mentioned how Ron got the role of Opie. Ronnie was optioned to appear on a possible CBS series called “Barnaby and Mr. O’Malley” which would have conflicted with Ronnie being able to appear on The Andy Griffith Show. Aaron Ruben put in a second hold for Ronnie to be on The Andy Griffith Show if the other series didn’t sell.
What a different version of Mayberry we would have had if Ronnie hadn’t been Opie.

We had the 7th Annual Mayberry Meet-up in Mt. Airy, NC the weekend of 18-19 July 2019 and it was another wonderful Mayberry family reunion. More than 130 fans of The Andy Griffith Show gathered in the courtyard of the Mayberry Motor Inn around the gazebo on Friday and Saturday evenings. Visiting, talking, Mayberry murder mystery solving, trivia and episode watching were on the agenda. A good time of fellowship was had by all.
I recommend watching the video version of this episode to get a more complete feel of what went on during the weekend. I did my best to describe things so audio podcast listeners wouldn’t feel left out but to paraphrase Briscoe Darling, “Seein’ speaks louder than words” in this case.

We hear from Randy Turner each week with his installment of This Week in Mayberry History. Randy tells us all about various actors connected to The Andy Griffith Show and he does an amazing job digging up interesting information on them.
I thought I’ll do something similar but less in depth and more of an overview of some of the actors who played major roles on The Andy Griffith Show. So, here’s some things you may not remember about some of our favorite Mayberry citizens before they moved to town.

I’ve been researching and I believe I’ve run across a few things that fans of The Andy Griffith Show may not be aware of. I realize that you may have heard some of these things but hopefully you’re enough like me that you have forgotten what you once knew or just don’t mind being reminded of fun facts.
Whatever the case may be, let’s enjoy a few minutes in Mayberry talking about old friends. I think we can both enjoy that.

Hang on to your notebook because I’m going to give you some information that you may want to write down and remember. We have a several notes from listeners that lead to me learning some things so I bet you’ll learn something too.
Do you know what a picnic is? I bet you think you do but you may not know why it was written on the signs at Foley’s and, before that, Crowley’s Market in Mayberry. After this episode of Two Chairs, you’ll be smarter than you were when the episode started. You may even get a certificate for learning just like Ernest T. Bass.
