Folks seemed to have enjoyed our last few episodes and our visits with the folks that live in, or have visited, the town that inspired “Mayberry” of The Andy Griffith Show.  I’m glad that’s the case because this episode we continue our visit with Alma Venable from the Mayberry Motor Inn in Mount Airy, NC.

Kenneth “Otis” Junkin joins me in the back room of the Mayberry Motor Inn as we hear more from Alma about Andy’s mother and many other things that provide a background that fans will enjoy.   My thanks to Alma for spending so much time with us and giving us a glimpse into the real “Mayberry” of Andy’s home town.

The week following Mayberry Days 2012 I was lucky enough to make my way back to the home of Mayberry Days, Mount Airy, NC.  It was a great visit!  I was able to spend time with Debbie and Darrel Miles, as you heard on episode 211 of this podcast, and the fun continued later into the evening.

Kenneth “Otis” Junkin and I were able to sit down with Mayberry Motor Inn owner Alma Venable to complete that wonderful, Mayberry evening.  We sat and talked about how she came to be the owner of the Mayberry Motor Inn, how she came to be “Aunt Bee,”  and so much more.

Welcome to the first episode of our 5th year of podcasting!

You are in for a real treat for this episode of year five. Our roaming reporter, Tom Rusk, was able to visit with LeRoy “Mack” McNees for a wonderful interview.  If you don’t know, LeRoy was a member of The Country Boys and appeared on two episodes of The Andy Griffith Show.  “Mayberry on Record” and “Quiet Sam” were the two episodes and LeRoy even had a speaking part on “Mayberry on Record.”

LeRoy is one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet in this world so I know you’ll enjoy this episode and it’s a great way to start off year five.

Two Chairs No WaitingNovember 12-17, 2011 folks in Mayberry went on “A Cruise to Mayberry #6” and I’ll tell you a good time was had by all.

Just one of the wonderful parts of the cruise was a presentation by Marsha Anne Hudson about the home she was blessed to have lived in and been a part of building.  This is a home that fans of The Andy Griffith Show would give their eye teeth to have for their very own.

I can’t even guess how much Barney Fife realitor would be able to get a Mayberry fan to pay for one in their town.

This is a two part episode and, as a first, I would recommend that you actually watch the video version of the podcast for these episodes so you can see all the things we are talking about.

If you can’t watch…don’t worry, there are photos on our Facebook fan page related to this episode so you can still see what we’re making comments about.

I know you’re going to enjoy the show so be sure to come back next week for the conclusion.

Two Chairs No Waiting 151: Betty Lynn

Two Chairs No Waiting

This episode we’re going to celebrate Betty Lynn’s 85th birthday.  Why, you may ask?  Well, the day I’m recording is August 29, 2011 which just happens to be Betty’s birthday and I though it would be fitting to tell “Thelma Lou” we all said “hey” on this, her special day.

The interview with Betty can be found on YouTube and was done several years ago at Mayberry Days by “Charles.”  I don’t know Charles who but hopefully somebody listening to Two Chairs will be able to let us know so I can give proper credit.

Born Elizabeth Ann Theresa Lynn on August 29, 1926 in Kansas City, Missouri, Betty began acting in radio. She was later discovered in a Broadway production and signed to 20th Century Fox. She made her film debut in the 1948 film Sitting Pretty opposite Robert Young. That same year, she appeared in June Bride with Bette Davis followed by roles in Mother Is a Freshman (1949), Cheaper by the Dozen (1950), and Payment on Demand (1951).

In the 1953-1954 television season, Betty was cast as June Wallace, the fictitious sister-in-law of the Ray Bolger character in the ABC sitcom Where’s Raymond?

After guest starring on various television series Betty won the role of Thelma Lou on The Andy Griffith Show. She portrayed the role regularly from 1961 until 1965 and made a final guest appearance in one episode during the sixth season(1965–1966).

Following the end of The Andy Griffith Show, Betty continued appearing in various television and film roles. In 1986, she reprised the role of Thelma Lou in the reunion television movie Return to Mayberry in which Thelma Lou and Barney Fife were finally married. In 2006, Lynn retired from acting and relocated to Mount Airy, North Carolina, the hometown of Andy Griffith and the town on which Mayberry was loosely based.

Betty Lynn currently makes monthly appearances at the Andy Griffith Museum in Mount Airy to sign autographs and meet with her fans.
