In researching for the podcast, I’m always looking for items that we Mayberry fans might enjoy. I ran across this story in the Showbiz Cheatsheet and knew it was something I’d never heard and thought it would be something you’d like, too.
Jack Dodson was only in the color episodes but he really did fit into the town of Mayberry. It was easy to believe that Howard Sprague was someone who grew up in Mayberry. He just fit.
This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring “Jean Hagen.”

Since this weeks Mayberry History by Randy is about Jack Dodson and since my voice is failing, I thought we would revisit TCNW #158 from October 18, 2011 and learn more about Mayberry’s Howard Sprague as well.
Jack liked camping, was a fan of boxing, Spencer Tracy movies, and he attended Carnegie Tech (Carnegie Mellon University as it’s known now).
I got a wonderful surprise back in 2006 when Scott Helmandollar wrote to me and shared a few photos his father had taken back in the mid-1950’s.
Let’s visit our Mayberry friends and learn more about Jack Dodson and Howard Sprague.
