TCNW 451: Yes Nancy, There is a Mayberry

Two Chairs No Waiting

Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:31:18

You folks remember the hearing the story written in New York’s The Sun newpaper back in 1897? I know you weren’t alive but it’s a famous story where a little girl wrote to the newspaper asking if Santa Clause was real. Well, that’s where I came up with the title of this weeks podcast episode because I had a voice mail from Nancy asking if Mayberry was a real town.

That question made me think of that long ago question from 8 year old Virginia O’Hanlon because I truly believe that Mayberry certainly exists as love and generosity and devotion exist. The spirit of Mayberry is something all Mayberry fans share. Andy once said that The Andy Griffith Show was about love. As sure as love it real, so is Mayberry and it lives right there in our hearts.

TCNW 423: Return to Mayberry Update

Two Chairs No Waiting

Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:20:22

Last episode we were reminded about the “Return to Mayberry” television movie by Randy Turner’s This Week in Mayberry History report so I thought it was fate when I ran across a forgotten Mayberry historical gem.

I was looking through the files on my computer trying to find a Mayberry related image and came across a folder named Everett. In that folder was a file named “ending.” Not a descriptive name but it made me want to open it to see what was in there. Turns out that it was a letter from The Andy Griffith Show writer Harvey Bullock from 1999 addressing a question about the “Return to Mayberry” and the possible alternate ending that was written.

This is BIG and I’m just sorry it’s been filed away in a digital folder for all these years but at least we get to hear the answer now.

I ran across an article by Ryan Vandergriff on TVOvermind.com called ‘A Return to Mayberry: Remembering “The Andy Griffith Show“‘ recently. It was published a little over a year ago but I thought it would be worth taking the time to talk about here on the podcast.

Bonus:  This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring information about the “Return to Mayberry” television movie.

TCNW 382: What Keeps Mayberry Alive

Two Chairs No Waiting

Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:14:49

Last episode I asked for you to tell me what it is that keeps Mayberry alive and well in our hearts and minds.  Well, I got a great answer from one of our listeners.  She shared it on the “Who’s Been Messin’ Up the Bulletin Board?” Chapters daily e-mail digest and gave me permission to share it with you.

I’d still like to hear what keeps Mayberry alive for you.  I think all Mayberry fans have thoughts about this and it would be fun to hear your thoughts.

TCNW 381: Mayberry’s Alive and Well

Two Chairs No Waiting

Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome

Over the years we have talked about what makes The Andy Griffith Show special and about how can we get others to watch these old black & white episodes.  What makes The Andy Griffith Show special to us and what might make it special even to those who were born years after TAGS went off the air in its original run?

Is it Barney, Floyd, Otis, Goober, Gomer, Aunt Bee, Opie, or one of many wonderful characters that appeared in Mayberry that make it so special?  Was it Andy Taylor?  Was it the town of Mayberry itself?

Was it, perhaps, all the above?  I think it may be that we all had a little bit of “Mayberry” in our lives when we were growing up. We may have known an “Aunt Bee” or an “Ernest T. Bass” at some point in our life.  Maybe you’ve worked with “Goober,” “Gomer,” or “Floyd.”  Is it because Mayberry reminds us a what “normal” might be?

You tell me what it is that keeps Mayberry alive and well in our hearts and minds.

Have you ever been to a Mayberry event?  In this episode we’ll talk about why I think you, as a fan of The Andy Griffith Show, should sit down and make plans to attend one of the many Mayberry related events around the country.  One of those reasons being getting to meet fellow fans in the flesh.

Over the years, I have met some of the salt of this earth at Mayberry events and many of them are now close friends.  Those friends are from all over the country and we tend to meet at events….kind’a like a family reunion of Mayberry fans.

I know that sounds all mushy but the people I have met through my fandom of The Andy Griffith Show are truly special. I know you are missing a blessing if you don’t take a chance and get to meet them too.

Two Chairs No Waiting 261: Thankful for Mayberry

As I was thinking about The Andy Griffith Show and what it’s meant to me over the years it came to me that I’ve never talked about what I’m thankful for related to Mayberry.

Of course we’re all thankful that Andy created the town of Mayberry for us all to visit each week but there’s so much more to give thanks for.   Let’s spend a few minutes talking about just some of the wonderful things that Mayberry has given us and brought into our lives.

What are you thankful for?  I’d love to hear the things you’re thankful for so call in or leave a comment.
