Two Chairs No Waiting

Who is the Mayberry Mystery Man? That’s a question that has been on the minds of fans for years and, like any good mystery, still keeps them guessing.

Mr. Schwamp, also known as Mr. Schwump by some, is the older dark haired man you often see sitting on the bench outside the barbershop or in groups of people in Mayberry.

Over the years, every cast and crew member of The Andy Griffith Show has been asked if they know the name of the actor who played Mr. Schwamp. While all of them remember him, none of them knows his real name.

Tonight we look at Barney’s Magic Badge.  I say magic because it appears and disappears from his uniform often throughout the episode.

In “Andy and the Gentleman Crook”, legendary con artist Gentleman Dan Caldwell arrives for a stopover in the Mayberry jail and quickly beguiles Aunt Bee, Opie, and Barney with his charm and sophistication. When Barney is left alone to watch him, Caldwell reels him into his web, takes his gun, and manages to escape. Before he reaches the courthouse door, Andy walks in with Aunt Bee and Opie, who are able to see through Caldwell’s charismatic veneer.

Andy and the Gentleman Crook
* Filmed: 21
* Aired: 21
* Original Air Date: 1961/02/27

While waiting for the arrival of Gentleman Dan, Barney works to clean the courthouse. Somehow, during all the cleaning, Barney’s badge begins to come and go from his uniform. It first leaves as Barney goes into the back room just before Dan arrives at the courthouse (time 8:27) and remains gone until he leaves the back room (time 8:51).

Barney’s badge stays put until he has locked up Mr. Caldwell and begins to talk to him through the bars of the jail cell (time 11:01) and asks for an autograph. The badge returns as Barney finishes his conversation with Dan (time 12:04).

It isn’t until later in the episode when Dan steals Barney’s gun and it about to make a get away (time 21:02). It’s hard to see the badge missing while Barney is still standing inside the cell but when he exits (time 21:31) it is very easy to see. Finally Barney’s badge returns (time 22:44) and remains.

As you can tell by the name of this episode, we’ll be hearing about “The Andy Griffith Show starring Andy Griffith; with Ronny Howard, Carl Griffith. Also starring, Don Knotts.”  Well, the announcer didn’t say that but I’m sure Andy would have liked it if he had.

In the episode “The Farmer Takes a Wife” guest staring the Skipper himself, Alan Hale Jr., as Jeff Pruitt we see Carl Griffith.  Listen to this episode of Two Chairs No Waiting to find exactly who Carl is and where in the episode he appears.

Who is Sid Elson, what is he proprietor of, and how does this connect to The Andy Griffith Show. Those are really good questions and in this episode we’re going deep into some trivial trivialities to get answers that I believe you’ll enjoy.

For a minute I thought I’d discovered something but Paul Mulik beat me to it…by more than 5 years. There are screen captures of the things we’ll talk about over on our Facebook fan page.

We’ll also talk just a bit about the Burke on Mayberry podcast.  Enjoy your stay here in our little corner of Mayberry.

Mayberry fans know that 411 Elm Street is the addresses given for where Barney Fife lives.  Well, in this episode we’ll have some fun and learn some history of these here United States in the process.

The shooting of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963 in Dallas, Texas changed America’s innocence. People stopped what they were doing and mourned for days over the news of the shooting.

Popular TV programs like “The Andy Griffith Show” stopped filming for days.

“My Fair Ernest T. Bass” was the episode being filmed the week President Kennedy was assassinated. What an amazing tribute to the actors that the episode shows no signs of sadness from that event.

How can I tie Mayberry to this historical event? You’ll have to listen to the podcast to find out.

Two Chairs No Waiting

A fellow fan of The Andy Griffith Show, Matthew Morgan, contacted recently to tell me that he’d seen something special while watching Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C.  This is certainly “inside baseball”, so to speak but big Mayberry fans will remember and hopefully enjoy our trivial meanderings through the world of Mayberry, NC.

In the season 7 episode of The Andy Griffith Show “Barney Comes to Mayberry”, yeah..it is color but stick with me, Barney Fife returned to Mayberry and happens to be on the same train with Teena Andrews, a Mayberry native returning to town for the premiere of her new Hollywood movie.

Teena’s publicity man learns she used to date Barney back when she was known as Irene Flogg so he arranges for Barn to escort her to the premiere.

Now that you’re up to speed on who Teena Andrews is, you’ll want to give a listen to find out how Teena shows up in the Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. season 4 episode called “Change Partners.”

I also want to mention Movie’s for the Blind where you can download and listen to, currently, 4 episodes of TAGS like they are audio books.  I think you’ll enjoy it and it’s a great service for those Mayberry fans who are visually impaired.

Christmas time is here so I thought I’d discuss the one and only Christmas episode of The Andy Griffith Show.

“Who’s Been Messin’ Up the Bulletin Board?” Chapter member, Janet brought to our attention recently an inconsistency in the Christmas episode that I’d never noticed so I thought I’d share it with you.  You’ll want visit the Photos link over on our Facebook fan page (http://www.facebook.com/twochairs) to see screen shots of the things I’m talking about in this episode when you have a chance. The magical card switch is easy to see (time 1:51 into episode on season DVD) when you watch the episode so pay attention when you watch the episode this Christmas.

Since next week is Christmas week, I’m going to play Miss Ellie singing “Away in a Manger” to close out to the show.

I hope you enjoy it.
