Over the years here on the podcast I’ve talked about being a “Floyd the barber” tribute artist and how I got started but I don’t think I’ve ever talked about the first time I appeared as Floyd in public. That would be at the 5th Mayberry Days back in 1994.
Mayberry Days in Mount Airy, NC began in 1990 on the 30th anniversary of The Andy Griffith Show and my first chance to attend was at the 4th Mayberry Days in 1993. My wife and I had a wonderful time and met so many folks that are still friends to this day.
Mayberry Days 1994 is special to me because I went out there and started to “act like somebody” and that somebody was Floyd. Doing that was something completely outside my comfort zone. I’m an electrical engineer and when I started doing Floyd I was 28 years old and I’d only been married 2 years.
Believe it or not, I’m an introvert. Dressing up like a barber and going out in front of people was not something I every thought I’d be doing.
When Jan and I got to Mayberry Days in 1994, I had my barber coat as well as my Floyd “fishing” outfit ready to go. I showed up Thursday night at the “Pig Pickin'” at the Cross Creek Country Club wearing the fishin’ outfit. Back then, the award ceremony following the Mayberry Days golf tournament was held in, what I believe, was the basement of the Country Club.

I too am introverted and I found out a long time ago it’s easier to join in on things when you playing someone else! Really makes a difference because you don’t have to be ‘you.’
Paul, that is so true. Since I’m “Floyd” and not “me” when I’m doing events, it does make it easier. I guess that’s why I stay in character so we’ll when I’m doing Floyd.
