Two Chairs No Waiting

Hey Mayberry,

WOW….let me just say that we had a wonderful time in Mt. Airy, NC this past weekend!

We had 29 Mayberry fans join us for the Mayberry Meet-up!  They came from *all* over but I think Ohio was well represented (4), Tennessee (4),  Alabama (3),  Georgia (2), and the most folks were from North Carolina (16) as it should be since we were in their back yard.

Friday started off great with a visit to the Andy Griffith Museum and autographs from “Thelma Lou” herself, Ms. Betty Lynn!  Folks stood in line for hours to meet Betty and get an autograph……none were disappointed.  She posed for photos and chatted with every person in line bringing smiles and tears to each along the way.

Friday and Saturday nights were highlights of the weekend for me, just behind visiting with Betty, because those able to do so gathered in the gazebo at the Mayberry Motor Inn  (thanks Alma!) to watch episodes of The Andy Griffith Show, select video clips from Mayberry & beyond, and visit!   Just like sitting on the Taylor’s front porch, we gathered to talk and get to know one another better.  What a wonderful time we had.

Hey Mayberry,

WOW….let me just say that we had a wonderful time in Mt. Airy, NC this past weekend!

We had 29 Mayberry fans join us for the Mayberry Meetup (listed below)!  They came from *all* over but I think Ohio was the well represented (4),  Tennessee (4),  Alabama (3),  Georgia (2), and the most folks were from North Carolina (16) as it should be since we were in their back yard. 🙂

Friday started of great with a visit to the Andy Griffith Museum and autographs from “Thelma Lou” herself, Ms. Betty Lynn!  Folks stood in line for hours to meet Betty, get an autograph and none were disappointed.  She posed for photos and chatted with every person in line bringing smiles and tears to each along the way.

Friday and Saturday nights were highlight of the weekend for me, just behind visiting with Betty, because those able to do so gathered in the gazebo at the Mayberry Motor Inn  (thanks Alma!) to watch episodes of The Andy Griffith Show, select video clips from Mayberry & beyond, and visit!   Just like sitting on the Taylor’s front porch, we gathered to talk and get to know one another better.  What a wonderful time we had.

During the day on Saturday, 6 car loads of the Mayberry crew headed first up to the “Old Mayberry Trading Post” to see the area where the name “Mayberry” originated.  We looked through the Trading Post and some folks found treasures there that they made their own.  We then traveled the 4 or so miles over to Maybry Mill for photos and some good ole American history on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We didn’t pass up a trip to the Maybry Mill Restaurant before we left for more time to visit another and tell lies to one another while we ate.

Sunday morning, the 12 of us remaining in town once again gathered at the gazebo for a session of the Mayberry Bible Study.  Following the study, those that didn’t have to head right back home went to break bread ones last time before departing.  The Bible study and eating were a fitting and wonderful way to wrap up this Mayberry Meetup weekend.

You can check out photos of the weekend by visiting the Facebook album (you do NOT have to sign up to Facebook to see the photos) at the following link:

Thank you to all who were able to attend and hopefully many of you may be able to join us if we do this again.

“Everything’s OKAY…in Mayberry!”

Two Chairs No Waiting 245: Mayberry Trivia

Two Chairs No Waiting

Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:18:08

In past episodes we’ve done trivia that was from the Mayberry Days Trivia contest held each year in Mt. Airy, NC.  Those questions are so hard that I thought we might have more fun answering, or trying to answer, questions that “regular” folks might actually have a chance to get right.

In this episode, we’ll have 11 questions that *might* be something you can answer.  How do you think you’ll do?  These questions aren’t super easy because I want to make you think but if you’re ready to give it a try…..let’s go!

Trivia from Cruise to Mayberry 2009

Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome

Last week we began our look into Mayberry Mayor Stoner…”Roy Stoner”…well actually we were looking at the man who played him and hearing about the wonderful radio career he had before the days of television.

On this episode we get to hear more from him about his movie and television roles.

I again want to thank The National Lum and Abner Society for allowing us to use this clip from their June 24, 1995 convention featuring Parley Baer as their special guest.  Tim Hollis, Donnie Pitchford, and Sam Brown are the  founding “ossifers” (or officers for those of you from the north) of the NLAS and they provided Two Chairs No Waiting this wonderful footage of Parley Baer.

Pull up a chair and join me down at the “Jot ’em Down Store” to see how things end up.  Let’s listen…..

Wow, this is going to be fun time in Mt. Airy!  I never expected to be able to meetup with so many of you next weekend (19-21 July 2013).

I’ll list at the bottom of the e-mail all those I have been told are planning to be in Mt. Airy with us so you will know who’s attending.   If you know of others that I’ve somehow missed, PLEASE let me know!

I’m putting out a “schedule” of things to do but PLEASE realize that nothing is mandatory and nobody will have hurt feelings if you choose to do other things during the times.  I’m just trying to let folks know where I will be and inviting you all to join me if it fits your schedule.

 == Friday Schedule ==

12:30 – 4:00 pm
— Andy Griffith Museum to Meet Thelma Lou, Betty Lynn, and tour the museum/visit with fans.
— Get a group photo by the Andy & Opie statue at some point.

— Free time. Go out with friends or alone to get something to eat or whatever you might like to do.

8:30 – 11:00 pm (or later)
— Gather at the Mayberry Motor Inn in the gazebo area (you don’t have to be staying there to come over and visit).
— Bring sodas, tea, punch and some snacks if you have ’em.
— BRING lawn chairs if you have ’em. (There are some chairs at the gazebo but to be safe, bring your own.)
— Watch episodes of The Andy Griffith Show together on a screen under the stars.
— Visit with friends.
— Maybe record a podcast episode together.  Think about a good quote about what Mayberry means to you and I’ll record you guys telling us one at time.

 == Saturday Schedule ==

When you wake – 12:30 pm

— Visit downtown Mt. Airy. Pick and choose
— Snappy Lunch (breakfast, lunch, or both – closes at 1:15 so eat early)

1:00 pm

— Gather at Mayberry Motor Inn for trip to the Old Mayberry Trading Post & Mabry Mill in Meadows of Dan, VA (about a 50 minute trip north of Mt. Ariy on the Blue Ridge Parkway).
— I think we’ll visit both for an hour or so each. (more or less as needed)
— We’ll pass over Mayberry Creek on the Blue Ridge Parkway.  Hopefully we’ll spot the sign and can stop for a photo at the sigh.

~5:00 pm

— Start back to Mt. Airy or maybe we could eat at the Mabry Mills Resturant. We’ll decide on the fly.  (https://www.mabrymillrestaurant.com/.shtml)

    — Back to the Gazebo at the Mayberry Motor Inn for visiting and videos under the stars.

Friends…all the above are options/suggestions for things to do in Mt. Airy.  The main events, to me, are the gatherings at the gazebo to visit and get to know one another.  I hope as many as possible will find time to drop by and grow our Mayberry friendships.

Jan and I are looking forward to seeing you all in Mayberry!

It’s been quite some time since we’ve talked about or heard from Mayberry’s Mayor Stoner…”Roy Stoner  … errr … S-T-O-N-E-R…you talk to him”…so it is time to correct that situation.

You are in for a treat thanks to the The National Lum and Abner Society and their June 24, 1995 convention featuring Parley Baer as their special guest.  Tim Hollis, one of the founding “ossifers” of NLAS (along with President Donnie Pitchford and Vice-President Sam Brown), provided Two Chairs No Waiting this wonderful footage of Parley Baer that I know you are going to enjoy.

We get to hear Mr. Baer discuss his start in radio, playing the character Chester on Gunsmoke, and more. As part of talking about Gunsmoke, you’ll hear Howard “Floyd the Barber” McNear as “Doc Adams.”

I hope there are a lot of you out there that are like me in that you are a fan of Andy Griffith and not only Andy Taylor.  If you are then you hopefully enjoyed watching Andy of Matlock. Even if you didn’t enjoy Matlock, I’m pretty sure you’re going to enjoy the Mayberry connections that can be found on Matlock.

Mayberry fan, Brian Saul, was kind enough to help me get some clips from Matlock that fans of The Andy Griffith Show are sure to love.

First up, did you know that Ben Matlock once knew a fellow that mispronounced kleptomaniacs by saying “kleptominerac?”  That’s right!  On the Matlock episode  “The Good Boy” that’s exactly what we hear.

Next, I’m sure you remember when Barney was showing Andy all he knew about Judo in TAGS episode “Barney’s Uniform.” Well, Don Knotts’ character Les Calhoun demonstrated his karate skills to Ben Matlock in the episode “The Fighter.”

Oh…and there’s so much more.  Sit back and enjoy this trip as Mayberry meets Matlock.
