Two Chairs No Waiting

Two Chairs No Waiting

The body of water called “Myers Lake” on The Andy Griffith Show is actually called the “Upper Franklin Reservoir.”  The reservoir is located in Franklin Canyon Park in Hollywood hill of Beverly Hills.

We talked about this area back on episode 13 of Two Chairs No Waiting back in January 2009.  For some reason that is one of the most downloaded and searched for episodes so I thought it would be a good time to return to Myers Lake.

Franklin Canyon Park is a public park located near Benedict Canyon at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains. The park comprises 605 acres, and is located in what is said to be the geographical center of the city of Los Angeles. The park features a 3-acre lake (a.k.a. Franklin Lake or Myers Lake by Mayberry fans), a duck pond (Heavenly Pond),  and over five miles of hiking trails. The park was used for the opening of The Andy Griffith Show.

The park traces its beginnings to 1914 when William Mulholland and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power built a reservoir in upper Franklin Canyon. The 1930s began the frequent use of the canyon for filming. Today about 25 films are shot there each year.

TCNW 126: Return to Myers Lake

Directions

2600 Franklin Canyon Drive, Beverly Hills, California

From the West Side, head north on Beverly Drive following signs to Coldwater Canyon. Turn left on Coldwater/Beverly Drive and turn left again on Beverly Drive , at Fire Station No. 2. The third right is Franklin Canyon Dr. continue through residential area to park entrance. At the intersection of Franklin Canyon and Lake Drive turn right to go to Franklin Canyon Ranch site or turn left to go to the Sooky Goldman
Nature Center and Franklin Canyon Lake.

From the San Fernando Valley, From the Ventura Freeway (101) or Ventura Blvd. Take Coldwater Canyon Boulevard south to the intersection of Coldwater Canyon and Mulholland Drive. Make a 90 degree right turn onto Franklin Canyon Dr. There is no street sign “Franklin Canyon.” Road signs read “Road Closed 800 Feet” “Sunset to Sunrise”; this is the park entrance. Do NOT make a “U-Turn” for this will bring you onto Mulholland Drive instead of Franklin Canyon. Stay on paved surface to reach the Sooky Goldman Nature Center and continue south of the lake for 1.5 miles to reach the Franklin Canyon Ranch Site area.

As you enter the “loop” that goes around the lake (it’s one way so this should make it easy to describe), you will have a wooden railing on the left. That railing is where Andy stopped on “The Return to Mayberry” and looked down at Myers Lake.  There is a parking area about 40 yards down on the left.

Park there and walk over to the railing just to the left of the parking area (not the railing that on the main road but the wooden “fence” that keeps folks from falling down the slope.   When you look down the slope you’ll see the path. This is where Andy and Opie walked.  There’s a wooden picnic table down there.

We’re heading back into the archives of The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watchers Club (TAGSRWC) to read about Mayberry folks from the mountains around town. The story is from “The Bullet,” the official newsletter of TAGSRWC, volume 1 issue 2 (March 18, 1983). This is a fun trip back down memory lane to the very early days of TAGSRWC.

We also hear from a caller who lets us know that Richard “Doc” Ferrara (one of the subjects of our last episode – #121) was mentioned on The Andy Griffith show episode “Ernest T. Bass Joins the Army.”

Tonight we’ll be hearing about a lady named Lee Canon and her brother Richard “Doc” Ferrara. I’m sure you’re asking, who are the Ferrara siblings and what’s this got to do with The Andy Griffith Show.

Lee Cannon’s first job was as a home economics teacher in Osage, a community near Cannon’s hometown of Morgantown, West Virginia.

It was also there in West Virginia’s coal country that Cannon’s brother Dr. Richard Ferrara first took banjo lessons from the famous banjoist Eddie Peabody. Doc’s biggest fan was Don Knotts of Andy Griffith fame, his best friend since middle school when the two started playing music together.

I guess you see the connection now so give a listen to some memories from Don Knotts Ferrara friends.

Two Chairs No Waiting

In this episode we’ll be talking about African-Americans living in Mayberry.  This is a topic that comes up from time to time in The Andy Griffith Show fan community and since this episode is being recorded on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the topic came to my mind.

The only primary African-American character to appear on The Andy Griffith Show was in the 7th season episode “Opie’s Piano Lesson.”  Volunteer football coach Flip Conroy, played by Rockne Tarkington, has to show Andy that Opie can do two things and do them both well. To illustrate his point, Conroy, an ex-New York Giant, sits down and plays a classical work on the piano.

We’ll talk about “extras” walking around Mayberry and the fact that there are African-Americans in Mayberry.  Of course this isn’t the same as having primary characters but we need to remember that this was a television show done to entertain, to escape to a better place for 30 minutes. Mayberry wasn’t the “real world” but I believe it did, and does, represent a world many would like to live in. A world where everyone, black, white, gypsies….whomever would be treated fairly and with respect.

I believe that we saw enough of Andy Taylor’s character to know that whomever was around him would be shown caring respect.  Let’s all try and show each other that same caring and pretend that we do live in Mayberry. If we do, I think this world would be a better place for us all.

Many of you might remember Don Knotts appearing on The New Scooby-Doo Movies aired back in 1972 and in reruns every since. He was on two different “movies” that year and it was easy to tell that the cartoon character was Don Knotts.

There’s a new cartoon called “Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated” that just started last week and the first episode was titled “Beware the Beast from Below.”  I mention this because the crowd at the beginning of the episode had standing there, front and center, the Don Knotts character from back in the 1970’s.

Check out the images at the link in the show notes below and see what you think.

Who is the Mayberry Mystery Man? That’s a question that has been on the minds of fans for years and, like any good mystery, still keeps them guessing.

Mr. Schwamp, also known as Mr. Schwump by some, is the older dark haired man you often see sitting on the bench outside the barbershop or in groups of people in Mayberry.

Over the years, every cast and crew member of The Andy Griffith Show has been asked if they know the name of the actor who played Mr. Schwamp. While all of them remember him, none of them knows his real name.
