Two Chairs No Waiting 253: Mayberry Tourism

There was talk in newspapers this summer about tourism related to The Andy Griffith Show and how it was slowing down.  I don’t know exactly what evidence the writer was using to write the article but I had the feeling that there wasn’t really any proof of things slowing down.  It was more of a “people can’t really keep enjoying ‘Mayberry’ so things have to be slowing down.”

I can’t say how things are in Mt. Airy, NC all year round but I can tell you that the Mayberry fans that live there don’t see “Mayberry” as dying.  I don’t think things are like some in Mt. Airy seem to believe and neither does John Peters who writes for PilotMountainNews.com.

Mr. Peters wrote an article in September 2013 titled “Still Plenty of Demand for Mayberry Tourism” and in this episode we’ll explore what he had to say as well as comment on his report.

Hey Mayberry,

WOW….let me just say that we had a wonderful time in Mt. Airy, NC this past weekend!

We had 29 Mayberry fans join us for the Mayberry Meet-up!  They came from *all* over but I think Ohio was well represented (4), Tennessee (4),  Alabama (3),  Georgia (2), and the most folks were from North Carolina (16) as it should be since we were in their back yard.

Friday started off great with a visit to the Andy Griffith Museum and autographs from “Thelma Lou” herself, Ms. Betty Lynn!  Folks stood in line for hours to meet Betty and get an autograph……none were disappointed.  She posed for photos and chatted with every person in line bringing smiles and tears to each along the way.

Friday and Saturday nights were highlights of the weekend for me, just behind visiting with Betty, because those able to do so gathered in the gazebo at the Mayberry Motor Inn  (thanks Alma!) to watch episodes of The Andy Griffith Show, select video clips from Mayberry & beyond, and visit!   Just like sitting on the Taylor’s front porch, we gathered to talk and get to know one another better.  What a wonderful time we had.

Fan’s had a real treat during Colonel Tim’s Talent Time held during Mayberry Days 2010. Elinor Donahue was a part of the show and on this episode of Two Chairs No Waiting we’ll be hearing from her.  We’ll hear in her own word why she left The Andy Griffith Show after only one season, her favorite episode and the story behind her singing “Away in a Manger” with Andy.  You won’t want to miss this one.

We’re also going to drop in on “Barney” and “Floyd” as we hear a story about Floyd’s glasses.  Big ain’t the word for it.

Folks seemed to have enjoyed our last few episodes and our visits with the folks that live in, or have visited, the town that inspired “Mayberry” of The Andy Griffith Show.  I’m glad that’s the case because this episode we continue our visit with Alma Venable from the Mayberry Motor Inn in Mount Airy, NC.

Kenneth “Otis” Junkin joins me in the back room of the Mayberry Motor Inn as we hear more from Alma about Andy’s mother and many other things that provide a background that fans will enjoy.   My thanks to Alma for spending so much time with us and giving us a glimpse into the real “Mayberry” of Andy’s home town.

The last few episodes we’ve been talking to folks who live in Andy Griffith’s home town of Mt. Airy, NC.  Now, Mt. Airy isn’t Mayberry but it’s about as close as you can get.  That said, I thought it would be fun to hear from a fellow fan of The Andy Griffith Show and the adventure of his first visit to “Mayberry.”

If you’ve never been to Mt. Airy, don’t over expect.  The town doesn’t look exactly like the town of Mayberry but there is a Floyd’s barbershop and there are many other Mayberry things to see that will make the trip worth your visit.

The week following Mayberry Days 2012 I was lucky enough to make my way back to the home of Mayberry Days, Mount Airy, NC.  It was a great visit!  I was able to spend time with Debbie and Darrel Miles, as you heard on episode 211 of this podcast, and the fun continued later into the evening.

Kenneth “Otis” Junkin and I were able to sit down with Mayberry Motor Inn owner Alma Venable to complete that wonderful, Mayberry evening.  We sat and talked about how she came to be the owner of the Mayberry Motor Inn, how she came to be “Aunt Bee,”  and so much more.
