Last week, we heard from “Floyd” who did a flashback to a time he and Bert Miller talked about going into business together. That was originally released on July 13, 2010 and was the first time I had done anything that reminded me of those old time radio (OTR) programs. It got me thinking about doing other episodes with Floyd & Bert that sound like “lost” OTR versions of The Andy Griffith Show.

It was June 5, 2012 (episode 191 & 192) before the first OTR “lost” episode was made. Writer and Two Chairs listener, Joe Gritton, provided me the script featuring Mayberry barber, Floyd Lawson, and door-to-door salesman, Bert Miller. A little over 4 years later, on July 5, 2016 (#384) I re-released the two episodes as a speical edition created to sound like an actual episode of The Andy Griffith Show from beginning to end with opening music and everything, no Two Chairs intro or anything.

Mayberry After Mid-day” begins with Bert Miller walking down the sidewalk of Main Street heading from the Mayberry Grande toward the courthouse. As Bert nears Floyd’s barber shop, he slows down and considers sitting down for a rest on the bench outside the barber shop window but decides to head on inside. Join them now in Mayberry and hear what happens.

As a note, we lost Joe Gritton last year and I am so grateful and thankful to have these OTR episodes to remember and honor him. These type episodes are hard to do and take a long time to perform and edit together but they are some of my favorite Two Chairs episodes. We’ll have another OTR Mayberry episode next week so come back if you enjoy it.

Back on episode 92 of Two Chairs, I thought it would be nice to have Floyd host the show. To paraphrase Floyd, “Ninety-two, people always talking about podcast but nobody does anything about it.” Floyd shares a flashback with us of a time when Bert Miller dropped by the barber shop with a business idea for Floyd. Enjoy this flashback and we hope you’ll let it take you to the land of rythme and pleasure or at least to a scene in Mayberry that we never witnessed but now we get to hear.

Then we’ll drop in on episode 94 of Two Chairs to remind ourselves about Other. You may know the names of the Darling boys are Rodney (guitar), Doug (also called Jebbin – banjo), Mitch (bass) and Dean (also called Other – mandolin) but do you know where the name “Other” came from? I mean the name “Other” of course. On this episode, we’ll find out.

We’ll also hear from a caller with a couple of corrections and additions to information about Don Knotts appearances on cartoons I mentioned in episode 93. You can go back and give that episode a listen if you’re still looking for Mayberry fun.

TCNW 735: Ghost and Mr. Chicken Review

Two Chairs No Waiting
Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:44:05

Almost 12 years ago I did a podcast about the wonderful Don Knotts movie, The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, and I think it’s time to review it again. The movie came on MeTV this past weekend during “Svengoolie” and I watched it along with fans all across the country. Facebook and other social media was buzzing with comments and, while I have the DVD, there’s something about being part of the audience along with fellow fans.

Set in Rachel Kansas, The Ghost and Mr. Chicken is in my opinion one of Don Knotts‘ best movies. I likely believe that because so many Mayberry townsfolk show up throughout and it’s Mr. Knotts first movie after leaving The Andy Griffith Show.

Don Knotts plays Luther Heggs but basically he’s playing “Barney Fife” by another name because the character acts almost exactly like Barn. The movie was written by Jim Fritzell and Everett Greenbaum who co-wrote 29 episodes of The Andy Griffith Show and one episode of Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C.. Andy Griffith also helped re-write the script but is uncredited for his efforts.

(NOTE: Fritzell and Greenbaum DID write the episode “The Darling Baby” when the name “Halcyon Loretta Winslow” was mentioned. Likely where the name “Halcyon Maxwell” came from for Reta Shaw’s character.)

TCNW 734: Mayberry in My Mailbox

Two Chairs No Waiting
Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:33:30

This past week I went out to my mailbox and what a wonderful surprise I found in there. Someone had placed a copy of the Weekend section The Huntsville Times from Friday December 17, 2021 in there featuring the coverstory ‘“The Andy Griffith Show” inspires new film starring Alabama Man.‘ When I asked my wife, Jan, if someone had mentioned they were dropping off a copy of the article for us she said nobody had mentioned it to her.

How nice that someone would hold onto a paper for almost a year and a half only to gift it to me. That really means a lot and it truely is a “Mayberry” thing to have done.

As you may have guessed, the article is about the Mayberry Man movie and it’s a good one so I thought it would be something you folks might enjoy.

On May 23, 2023, Rik Roberts and I will be attending the International Christian Visual Media (ICVM): 50th Annual Crown Awards where Mayberry Man is finalists for Best Comedy.

TCNW 733: Return to Mayberry Again

Two Chairs No Waiting
Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:39:15

It’s May and for the past several years the MeTV network has shown extra MAY-berry things throughout the month. This year, they are kicking off the first weekend of MAYberry with the TV reunion movie, Return to Mayberry, on Sunday May 7, 2023 @4pm ET. Hopefully you aren’t getting this episode late and missed it but even if you are, I think you’ll find things here that you’ll enjoy learning about the movie and what happened to our Mayberry friends.

The movie originally aired on April 13, 1986; almost 18 years after the series ended. Sixteen original cast members reunited to reprise the characters fans all came to know and love during the 8 years of The Andy Griffith Show. On April 11, 1986 the New York Time wrote an….unfriendly review of the television movie saying it was “a less appealing reunion for the audience than it may have been for its actors.” Well, they were proven wrong because “Return to Mayberry” was the highest-rated television film of 1985-86 with around one-third of the TV-viewing public having tuned in to the broadcast.

We’ll even play a little Return to Mayberry trivia. Come along with us and let’s have fun talking Mayberry.
